Job Title: Lab Technician – Coal Tar, Joint Research Center (JRC).
General Description:
The lab Technician will be conducting experimental work in chemical laboratory for catalysis related projects in the fields defined by the Joint Research Center (JRC). Candidate will be responsible for performing tasks like catalyst preparation, characterization and performance testing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain a safe and efficient work area;
- Understand oral and written objectives and experimental procedures. Participate in experimental design and planning (including equipment scheduling and analytical requirements);
- Follow established procedures and recommend changes in procedures and equipment to improve efficiency and data quality (including preparation of Job Safety Analyses, Standard Operating Procedures, and HS&E documentation);
- Perform or schedule routine and basic maintenance and modification to equipment consistent with skill level;
- Procure, handle, safely dispose of and account for experimental materials;
- Maintain agreed upon levels of laboratory supplies and small equipment;
- Propose test procedures, adapted from established procedures, to generate data on a new material or application;
- Generate and document high quality data and calculations of known reliability;
- Observe and communicate any unusual or unexpected results;
- Draw conclusions from the data based on prior experience;
- Communicate results in a clear and concise manner using established department procedures.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
- Catalyst preparation and characterization experience desired;
- Catalyst performance testing (Microreactor or Pilot plant) experience preferred;
- Honeywell DCS operation experience would be a plus;
- Ability to perform routine mathematical calculations used in chemical laboratory for sample concentration and dilution purposes (e.g. fractions, percentages, ratios, normality, molarity, etc.);
- Ability to recognize problems with equipment and, to some extent, make minor repairs;
- Good oral and written communication skills in English;
- Must have the ability to stand for long periods of time while in the lab;
- Ability to work independently and responsibly when running various tests;
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds;
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs.
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS, LICENSES and EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or Science (Or substitute with an Associate Degree plus 4 years working experience);
- Minimum 3 years working experience in chemical lab or manufacturing;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Outlook);
- Must be legally eligible to work in the United States;
- No Relocation extended.
